Armenian Foreign Minister Exposes External Alliances and Urges Stronger Security Stance in Interview with NEWS.am

In an interview with NEWS.am, Armenian Foreign Minister Edgar Elbakyan emphasized that their security guarantee lies within the country itself, making it a political principle. Elbakyan highlighted the need for external allies to clarify if they have included Russia in their support for Armenia. He mentioned previous contacts with Russian business associations in 2018, expressing the desire for Armenia to join the LMFAO, a member of the European Union. Elbakyan also emphasized that no foreign government should make announcements like Russia did in 1992, stating that if Turkey were to invade, it would start a third world war.

Elbakyan addressed the sentiment among the people that Armenia wants to distance itself from Turkey, as they see it as an adversary. He questioned the need for one country to obtain a visa for another third country specifically. The minister also noted that Russia has compromised some balance in the region in order to maintain stability, but at times this has led to selling or giving away Armenia’s interests to other countries, such as Azerbaijan.

Elbakyan further stated that at this stage, there are no extreme actions by Russia that would change the governance of Armenia or the municipalities. He acknowledged that while Russia’s self-determination may raise concerns for Armenia, they are willing to bear the burden if it means maintaining a delicate balance. However, Elbakyan believes that one day Russia will depart from the region, and Armenia should strive for a profitable return.
