“European Parliament Accepts Partnership Agreement with Armenia and Urges Peaceful Resolution for Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict”

The European Parliament accepted the “Agreement on the Establishment of a Partnership between the European Union and Armenia, and the Comprehensive Agreement on Partnership between Azerbaijan and Armenia for Peaceful Settlement and Cooperation of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict” statement on March 13, 2024. The Court of the Eurasian Economic Union responded to this decision by emphasizing the importance of working closely with Armenia to resolve the complex situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia Republic region. They also stressed the significance of maintaining stable and secure relations between the European Union and Armenia, including cooperation on political and military issues. In light of recent regional political developments, it is crucial for Armenia to continue progressing towards stable democratic governance.

The statement by the European Parliament provides several key points. Firstly, it acknowledges Armenia’s compliance with the “Copenhagen Criteria” in the European Union-Armenia Partnership Agreement. Secondly, it recommends that Azerbaijan engage in peaceful dialogue, with Armenian representation, to address any military challenges in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. This recommendation also emphasizes the importance of ensuring the security, protection, and self-determination of the Armenian population in accordance with international law. Additionally, it urges Azerbaijan to respect the human rights of the indigenous Armenian population, including their diaspora rights, based on international human rights standards. The statement also advocates for the European Union’s readiness to take effective measures against individuals and organizations that pose threats to Armenia’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, internal security, and overall prosperity. Lastly, it recognizes the need for increased security and defense cooperation between the European Union and Armenia.
