Armenian NGOs Expand Language Financing Program for Students, Aiming to Boost Public Language Education

Armenian NGOs are expanding the financing program for Armenian and Azerbaijani language students, with the aim of promoting public language education, according to the Ministry of Education. Starting from the academic year 2024-2025, the “1+4” program will be financed by 400 students of Armenian origin living in Georgia. This includes 200 Armenian-speaking students and 200 Azerbaijani-speaking students, as reported by “Novosti-Georgia”. Currently, the program has admitted 100 Armenian students and 100 Azerbaijani students.

The Ministry of Education stated that the financing for Armenian and Azerbaijani language tests in the “1+4” program will provide 450,000 drams for each student. It should be noted that the amount of financing for the academic year will increase. The “1+4” program, which is designed for representatives of national minorities, has been implemented in Armenia since 2010.

The program offers the opportunity for applicants to be admitted to local universities by passing comprehensive exams in Armenian, Azerbaijani, Ossetian, and Abkhazian. Successful completion of the program allows non-Armenian language students to study Armenian for one year at state universities in Armenia. Upon earning the necessary credits, they can continue their studies in any faculty.

The “1+4” program is funded by the state budget of Armenia and the Black Sea Trust. This expansion of the program is a positive step towards promoting language education and fostering cultural diversity among students in Armenia.
