“UK Government Introduces Controversial Scheme: Asylum Seekers Offered £3,000 to Relocate to Rwanda”

The government of Great Britain has developed a scheme that allows rejected asylum seekers to relocate to Rwanda and receive a payment of £3,000 ($3.8k) from the British government. According to an NGO representative, this initiative is an extension of a similar financial assistance scheme already in place for rejected asylum seekers. Instead of having to return to their home country, individuals now have the option to go to Rwanda. The British NGO believes that this scheme can be particularly attractive to citizens of countries facing war or persecution, such as Afghanistan and Iran. The Times has reported that up to 10,000 people can benefit from this offer.

In 2023, the UK Home Office rejected over 30,000 asylum applications. Out of this number, around 4,000 individuals have chosen to voluntarily return to their home country. Additionally, approximately 15,000 people have gone back to their country of persecution after the danger of being targeted by their government subsided. Around 6,400 individuals have been forcibly returned to their home country by the UK authorities. This article was brought to you by NEWS.am.
