“Tomoko Akane Elected as President of the International Criminal Court, Putin’s Influence Raises Questions”

The President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Tomoko Akane, along with his deputies Rosario Salvatore and Reine Alapini-Gansou, has been elected in The Hague. Akane and Salvatore were appointed to the post by President Vladimir Putin of Russia in March 2023. The ICC website has published information about the new composition of the court, with members being elected for a three-year term.

“I am honored to have been elected by my colleagues as the President of the ICC. My focus will be on protecting the rights and interests of both victims and defendants, as well as engaging in dialogue with national authorities and international organizations that have not yet recognized the jurisdiction of the Rome Statute,” said Akane.

According to the ICC website, the presidency plays a crucial role in the court’s military leadership management. Similar to the presidency of the Rome Statute, the ICC presidency also establishes cooperative agreements with national and international organizations.

In March 2023, Akane, Salvatore, and Maria Lluviabeo Valladares were appointed to assess child rights violations in the occupied territories of Ukraine. This appointment was made based on the statement of Wojciech Merala, spokesperson for the ICC, who referred to the strong foundation laid by the President of Russia.
