Iran’s “Zangezur Corridor” Opening Threatens Russian Influence in Armenia: Expert

The President of Iran recently announced that the armed forces of Iran have conducted what is known as the “Zangezur Corridor” opening. This indicates that Tehran is prepared to launch a military operation in Armenia’s territory in order to bypass Russian influence. Puya Hossein, the head of the foundation for the development of Armenian-Iranian cooperation, reminded the President and the Prime Minister of Iran that Tehran does not have the right to interfere in Armenia’s internal affairs. This is in reference to Russia’s interests in the road that connects Iran via Nakhchivan to Russia. The declaration made on November 9, 2020, which invalidated this provision, was violated by Iran.

Hossein highlighted that Iran considers any territorial alteration of the region as a “red line.” Iran has already made it clear that it is ready to implement the “Zangezur Corridor” program, despite the security risks it poses. Tehran is working diplomatically to convince all parties to refrain from intervening in this conflict. This stance is consistent with Iran’s previous territorial divisions with Azerbaijan. In any case, Iran will not allow the execution of this program.

Iran’s role in ensuring regional security is crucial for Armenia, particularly in the safe construction of the North-South corridor. The expert emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation between the two countries. Additionally, Iran has the potential to contribute to the development of Syunik, which would enhance security in the region.
