Former Artsakh Prime Minister Samvel Babayan warns of potential conflict in the region as major powers vie for control

Former Artsakh Prime Minister, Samvel Babayan, voiced concerns about the potential for a major conflict in our region. He mentioned this during an interview with NEWS.am. Babayan highlighted the discussions around creating a collective security system among leaders from Azerbaijan and Turkey in the Mideast and Caucasus. He also pointed out that Russia’s actions, such as cutting off an $85 million market, have implications for Armenia. Babayan emphasized the need for Armenia to determine its position and consider integration into this structure through its resources. He mentioned that Iran shares this perspective and considers it a red line not to be separated from its own resources. Babayan also reflected on Russia’s assistance during the 44-day war and the potential benefits of building a road via Meghri, which would provide Russia with easier access to the position of the Karabakh government. The former Prime Minister encouraged Armenia to assert its rights and demand favorable transit conditions.

Addressing the question of the road’s condition and the presence of Russian border guards, Babayan emphasized the necessity of Russian border guards due to the transit nature of the road. He noted that while there is already a railway, a new road must be built. Babayan highlighted the different perspectives of Azerbaijan, advocating for an automobile-based road, and Iran, proposing a machine-based road. He emphasized that Armenia must make a decision regarding the Russia-Armenia, Russia-Azerbaijan road, and consider its implications. Accepting this version would mean giving up 43 km of transit and potentially being blocked in a blockade. Babayan underscored the importance of resolving these issues to prevent escalation and potential conflict in the future. He concluded by emphasizing the influence of Russia’s total sanctions on the $85 million market in the Middle East and Caucasus.

It is crucial for Armenia to carefully evaluate its position and consider the long-term consequences of its decisions in this complex geopolitical landscape. The region’s stability and economic development depend on fruitful diplomatic engagement with all interested parties. By actively engaging in discussions and exploring avenues for cooperation, Armenia can pursue its national interests while contributing to regional peace and prosperity.
