“Portugal Holds General Elections Amidst Pandemic and Political Tension: What’s at Stake?”

General elections took place in Portugal on Sunday, with 10.8 million registered voters eligible to participate. These elections are happening against the backdrop of a global pandemic and socioeconomic challenges. Historically, the Left Bloc and the Social-Democratic Socialist Coalition have alternated in governing for decades, but smaller coalitions such as the Democratic Movement “Coalition” and the Communist Democratic Coalition have also played a role. These parliamentary formations are expected to receive the majority of votes, as usual.

Prior to the election campaign, political tension was already high. Part of this tension can be attributed to the “Chega” (It’s Enough) coalition, which has the potential to significantly impact the current political landscape. Voting began at 08:00 local time and the majority of the election results are expected to be announced at 20:00, a few hours after the polling stations close.

Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has urged citizens to vote, emphasizing that periods of uncertainty weaken the country’s well-being. In the previous presidential elections in 2022, voter participation stood at 51 percent.
