“Meni Naftalyan appointed as head of inquiry into deadly Mount Meron tragedy; former officials to be held accountable”

The Public Commission of Inquiry into the Tragedy of the Deaths of People, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has appointed Meni Naftalyan as the head of the commission responsible for investigating the tragedy that took place during the Lag B’Omer pilgrimage on Mount Meron. The incident resulted in the deaths of 45 people, including Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, who is buried at the site. These reports come from The Times of Israel.

In addition to revealing the findings of their two-year investigation, the commission has also stated that several officials, including Amir Ohanan, the former Minister of Public Security, and Kobi Shabtai, the former Commissioner of the Israel Police, will be held accountable for the deadliest calamity in Israel’s history, which occurred during the religious event. It has been discovered that the tragedy was caused by a stampede during the festivities. Furthermore, it has been revealed that no warnings were issued regarding the overcrowding on the path leading to Naftalyan, despite officials being aware of the riskiness of the site as official institutions had been warning about it for years.

It is important to remember that the tragedy occurred on April 29, 2021, during the religious Lag B’Omer pilgrimage on Mount Meron, the burial site of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai.
