“Gegharkunik Protests: Farmers Block Highway Due to Soaring Prices of Agricultural Products”

Residents of Gegharkunik province in Armenia are expressing their discontent with the high prices of agricultural products, such as potatoes and cabbage, by closing the Martuni-Vardenis highway temporarily. The demand for these products is low, and the prices are not covering the cost of production. Moreover, the government has not provided support to farmers in selling their produce. Martuni mayor, Hovhannes Hoveyan, has called on residents to take action within five days. As a result, protesters have blocked the road.

Hakov Baroyan, a member of the “Alashkert” group, highlighted the ongoing uncertainty among the people. They are unable to sell their products while needing to start agricultural work. Baroyan pointed out that the lack of government-imposed import limits on potatoes and cabbage is the main reason for this situation. Some businessmen are profiting while the villagers are left behind. In Zolakar village alone, there are over 700-800 tons of potatoes and more than 1000 tons of cabbage. The neighboring villages are facing similar challenges.

Baroyan further explained that potatoes are being imported from abroad for only 50 drams per kilogram, which is significantly lower than the prices in local stores. This discrepancy makes it difficult for villagers to sell their produce and sustain their livelihoods. Many villagers are forced to sell potatoes for only 120-130 drams this year, which is less profitable compared to previous years. These circumstances create a loss for the farmers.

The situation in Gegharkunik province highlights the struggles faced by farmers due to low demand, imported products, and insufficient government support. The closure of the Martuni-Vardenis highway by residents serves as a powerful protest against these challenges. It remains to be seen how the government will respond and address the concerns of the agricultural community.
