Former Head of Special Investigation Service Released from Detention Amid Ongoing Trial

It is understandable that the final decision on this issue has not been made yet, so I am grateful. Today, on March 4, during the meeting with journalists after being released from the court detention, the former head of the Special Investigation Service Gagik Jhangiryan noted that the previous statement that should have been made regarding that decision did not happen. The trial is still ongoing, so I cannot give detailed information, but in my previous statements I have said that I do not consider myself guilty of what happened to me, both morally and legally, and I do not allow such accusations against me,” he said.

With regards to the incident, where a gunshot was fired and a person was injured, Tirayr Khachatryan said, “If you follow the process, it will become clear that the gunshot has occurred in certain circumstances, like an accident. However, I have not intentionally harmed anyone or attempted to harm them. I did not have such intentions, and you can accept that. I have experienced much worse things,” he said.

Earlier, NEWS.am reported that former head of the Armenian Armed Forces General Staff, Lieutenant General Onik Gasparyan, was appointed as the new head of the Special Investigation Service. The court decided today, on March 4, to release him from detention with bail set at 5 million drams and to suspend the restriction on leaving the country.

Lawyers of the former head of the special investigation, during the previous court session, had requested that the measure of restraint be changed, applied administrative supervision, or house arrest.

“Cancel the measure of restraint imposed on Tirayr Khachatryan and choose another measure of restraint, bail in the amount of 5 million drams, and suspend the restriction on leaving the country. Tirayr Khachatryan was unconditionally released,” the judge stated. The payment document should be submitted to the Kotayk Regional Court for payment within three days. The payment should be made to the body performing the crime prevention in the form of an institution and the person carrying out activities in relation to it, according to the judge. After the announcement of the decision, applause broke out in the courtroom.

We remind that Tirayr Khachatryan was arrested this year on January 11, in the Aramus village, during an incident that occurred at a restaurant where a physical altercation took place, and in a few days, he was transferred to the hospital for medical treatment.

The complaints filed by the defense were discussed in the Criminal Court during the previous session. According to the NSS, an alarm was received on January 11 this year at 23:39. The message came from the “Avoyan” memorial complex, informing that in the direction of the right side of the village of Aramus, a person from Aramus “was injured as a result of a rapid fire of firearms reportedly with a shotgun.” The person injured as a result of the gunshot had already been taken to a medical institution, the NSS reported.
