“Power Struggle: SDA Judges in Controversial Selection Process for Trial Judge”

“Jhoghovurd” newspaper reported that the ruling party, the SDA, did not participate in the recent selection of judges organized by the Judicial Department for the consideration of David Balaian’s application. As a result, the judges of the SDA will once again choose the judge for the trial and seek approval from the AJ. This raises concerns about potential political influence in the selection process. The newspaper mentioned that Davit Khachatryan, the brother of Sason Khachatrian, former chairman of the Constitutional Court, may be nominated despite being previously rejected by the judges.

The newspaper attempted to contact Davit Khachatryan for verification, but their messages and calls went unanswered. It is important to remember that in order for the SDA judge to become a judge, they had appealed to Yerevan city court judge David Balaian and Davit Khachaturyan. Although the judges voted in favor of Balaian, he was not elected by the SDA. This has led to the judges gathering once again to reconsider the selection. Additionally, Judge Arayik Tounyan, a judge of the RA Constitutional Court, received disciplinary punishment and was subsequently removed from his position as a judge.

It is worth noting that Tounyan was elected as a judge of the European Court of Human Rights, resulting in his release from his previous role as a judge of the SCA.
