“Molly Malone Statue Vandalized: Dublin’s Urban Council Considers Measures to Protect Iconic 17th-Century Art”

Dublin’s urban council is considering measures to protect the 17th-century statue of Molly Malone, a popular street vendor, after it was vandalized during a protest involving numerous activists. The statue has been painted with graffiti, according to The Telegraph.

Activists are specifically targeting the iconic representation of art, which portrays the deceased street vendor who achieved success in her trade. However, many people have criticized the vandalism of her statue, arguing that it exhibits “insensitivity” and a “micro-aggression” towards the ongoing cultural war.

Dublin’s urban council is examining ways to protect the statue, which is located in an open space dating back to the 17th century. Proposed measures include the installation of barriers, the use of benches or plants to create a protective barrier, or even relocating the statue to a different location. The council is being cautious in its approach, considering the sensitive nature of the well-known historical site.

Rey Yeats, the spokesperson for the council’s art department, emphasized the importance of preserving the entrance to the statue. However, he also acknowledged that such preservation efforts can lead to increased maintenance and repair costs.
