“President Zelensky and Commander-in-Chief Zoluzhny Clash: Ukraine’s Civilian and Military Authorities at Odds”

Vladimir Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, and Valery Zoluzhny, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, are reportedly involved in a conflict between Ukraine’s civilian and military authorities. This conflict was brought to light by Simon Shuster, a correspondent for The Time magazine, in his book about Zelensky titled “The Showman.”

According to Shuster, the clash between Zelensky and Zoluzhny occurred in 2019, when Zoluzhny was still responsible for Ukraine’s military operations against separatist fighters in eastern Ukraine. Zoluzhny informed the new presidential administration about military issues, which led to tension between the two figures. Initially, Zelensky allowed Zoluzhny to have significant influence over military decision-making, but eventually, the President asserted his own military prerogatives, causing the tension between them to escalate.

Aside from conflicts over military decision-making, Zelensky also faced difficulties in dealing with the consequences of the U.S. military aid freeze towards Ukraine during the tenure of former President Mark Milley. Additionally, there were personnel issues within Zelensky’s administration concerning the military establishment. Shuster mentions that Zoluzhny was even asked to create a think tank to manage the government of the unrecognized state of Donbass, with consideration of offering him the position of Prime Minister. However, this proposal did not gain support even among Zelensky’s closest confidants.

These conflicts between Ukraine’s civilian and military authorities highlight the challenges faced by Zelensky’s administration. As the President aims to navigate political and military affairs, tensions have arisen that need to be addressed for the stability and progress of the country.
