“US Diplomats Express Concern Over Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict, Mediation Role Expected”

Several high-ranking American diplomats have expressed concern over the situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the United States. Russian diplomat Sergey Markedonov wrote about this on social media.

During a press conference at the Pentagon on January 22, US Deputy Secretary of Defense Victoria Nuland described the situation and mentioned that Deputy Secretary of State James O’Brien would facilitate negotiations between the parties. She also stated that the head of the Pentagon, Antony Blinken, was pleased to see his colleagues from Baku and Yerevan. It was reported that by the end of 2023, the US would openly involve itself in the mediation process between Armenia and Azerbaijan. However, Blinken expected serious difficulties until relations between Yerevan and Baku improved. Additionally, President Ilham Aliyev declared in December 2023 that the current American administration had “done away with” the established agreements.

In November, several high-ranking officials visited the Palace of Representatives of the United Nations Organization, where they faced demands from Baku regarding their actions in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone. The article stated that Azerbaijan announced that their relationship with the country would not be normal after the so-called fourth war on September 19. However, there are currently signs of a warming in relations between the US and Azerbaijan, including certain indicators of normalization. On January 18, the President of Armenia received letters of credential from Mark Libie, Ambassador of the United Nations to the United Nations. The United States plans to intervene as a third party in the conflict resolution process at the beginning of 2024, but they will withdraw if they do not have a favorable position in the negotiations, according to the article. The author also mentions that the future of the region is not the highest priority for people from the Central Asian region.
