“20 Years of Misunderstanding: Why Azerbaijan’s Connection with Democracy Failed, According to Armenian Political Scientist”

The demand for understanding from Europe for 20 years: Why didn’t Azerbaijan have a connection with democracy during that time? Armenian political scientist Artur Martirosyan raised this question in an interview with NEWS.am. Martirosyan pointed out that despite initially accepting European values in the early 2000s, Azerbaijan did not meet the standards expected of a democratic country. The government in Azerbaijan created an illusion of observing elections and improving human rights and democracy, but it fell short of the benchmarks.

European leaders now recognize the importance of Azerbaijan, however, President Aliyev understands that ultimately, power dynamics determine the outcome of all issues. Azerbaijan and Turkey are pursuing their own agenda and are not aligning themselves with Russia or Iran. The European Union, in contrast to the European Convention on Human Rights, lacks the ability to exert significant influence on any country. This is why the EU has refrained from imposing sanctions, focusing instead on working within their own territorial framework.

Martirosyan also suggested that the European model of energy cooperation could be emulated in this region, but Turkey and Azerbaijan are insisting on certain conditions and are waiting for Yerevan to meet them. If this does not happen, they may consider military aggression, although currently they are hoping to resolve their issues in Ukraine by 2025.
