Treasured Fortress of Red Stone Ravaged by Vandals: Archaeological Site in Armenia Suffers Severe Damage

In the Zovuni community of Kotayk province in Armenia, a significant discovery has been made during maintenance work at the state monument memorial complex. The ancient fortress known as “Karmir Berd” (Fortress of Red Stone) has been unearthed, revealing a wealth of historical artifacts. However, it has been reported by the Ministry of Emergency Situations that the site has unfortunately fallen victim to vandalism and destruction. The walls have been damaged, bricks stolen, and even traces of gold theft have been found.

In response to this act of destruction, the Cultural Heritage Protection and Historical Environment Preservation Division of the Ministry of Emergency Situations has requested the intervention of the National Security Service. It is hoped that the culprits will be identified and prosecuted accordingly.

Karmir Berd holds a rich historical significance, with a complex that comprises a fortress, temple, tomb, bas-reliefs, and ancient carvings. The fortress, covering an impressive 6.3 hectares, sits atop a hill on the right bank of the Hrazdan River in Hrazdan Gorge. The entrance to the fortress is situated in the southeastern part of the complex, on the eastern slope of Mount Yegvardajur. Of particular interest is a unique bas-relief inscription found on a black stone near the entrance.

Excavations within the fortress have revealed remnants of residential buildings and structures from the medieval and early modern period. Bronze and wooden houses have been unearthed, along with foundations of dwellings and other structures. The central entrance of the fortress leads to the middle and lower parts, where the present-day village of Zovuni is situated.

It is deeply saddening to witness the destruction of such a significant historical site. Efforts must be made to preserve and protect our cultural heritage, ensuring that future generations can continue to learn from and appreciate these invaluable pieces of history.
