Council of Europe President Warns of Attempts to Undermine International System and Human Rights Abuses

Nicholas Christodoulides, the head of the Council of Europe, has expressed concern over attempts to undermine the international system and violate the rule of law. He emphasized the importance of peace, dialogue, and respect for human rights and the rule of law, which are principles that have been in place for 75 years since the establishment of the Council of Europe. Christodoulides also highlighted the significance of diplomacy in resolving conflicts, stating that armed conflicts have no place in today’s society.

In addition, he cautioned against using political differences as barriers and stressed the need for knowledge and dialogue to prevent destructive consequences. To illustrate the potential for peace initiatives, he mentioned the Cyprus Sea Channel project, which aims to provide humanitarian assistance to residents of Gaz and promote peace and dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Cyprus’ division, Christodoulides emphasized that the rights of all Cyprus citizens, including Cypriot Greeks and Turks, Maronites, Armenians, and Latin-Americans, are equally protected. He reiterated the importance of upholding the rights and fundamental freedoms of every European citizen.
