“Amazon Faces Hefty Fine of 32 Million Euros in France for ‘Excessive Eavesdropping’ on Employees”

According to the BBC, Amazon has been fined 32 million euros in France for “excessive eavesdropping” on its employees. The French data protection authority, CNIL, announced that Amazon France Logistique, the warehouse operator, has been collecting data from employees’ wristbands. While Amazon has ensured compliance with the law by requiring employees to track their movements, CNIL has questioned the need for retaining employee data for 31 days. As a result, an investigation has been launched by the French data protection authority into Amazon’s warehouses, as it has been found in violation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) pertaining to employee complaints and workplace surveillance. Among the areas of non-compliance highlighted by CNIL is Amazon’s failure to adequately inform employees and external visitors to its online marketplace about surveillance practices.
