Serbian Opposition Leader Nikola Sandulović Brutally Tortured by Captors, Reveals Disturbing Details to The Guardian

Serbian opposition leader Nikola Sandulović, who was arrested in January 2023, has revealed to The Guardian that he was tortured while in custody. Sandulović was detained by the Serbian National Opposition Coalition for allegedly inciting the population to revolt against the government of Kosovo. According to his lawyer, Sandulović was severely beaten during the interrogation at the Bureau of Investigation and Information Security headquarters, and he was kept in isolation to exert psychological pressure on him.

The reason for his detention was a report published by Sandulović in X magazine, where he paid tribute to the leaders of the Kosovar Liberation Army who were killed in 1998 by placing flowers at the Adem Jashari memorial in Prekaz village. Sandulović has since been released from custody and has alleged that he was tortured, forced to confess, and threatened with harm to himself and his family during his captivity.

His lawyers have stated that he suffered physical injuries and psychological trauma as a result of the severe treatment he endured. Sandulović himself has described the treatment by Serbia’s secret police officers as barbaric and has accused them of planning to kill him and his family. The incident has drawn attention to the issue of human rights violations in Serbia.
