“European Commissioner Sounds Alarm: Deteriorating Human Rights Situation in Armenia After Recent Armed Conflict”

European Human Rights Commissioner Dunja Mijatović recently completed visits to Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the Republic of Artsakh. Following her meeting with the Prime Ministers of the European Union in Strasbourg on January 17, 2019, it was announced that the European Union will be publishing a report based on the results of these visits. The report has been commissioned by the Union and the Member States and will shed light on the situation in Armenia and its recent deterioration.

A statement released by the European Union’s delegation to Armenia emphasizes the Commissioner’s observations, which indicate a significant deterioration in the country’s situation. This deterioration is a result of the armed actions that took place on September 19 and 20 between the military operations of Azerbaijan and the escalation of the situation in Laçin. The situation is becoming increasingly challenging.

The European Union places great importance on respecting the rights of the population of the Republic of Artsakh and ensuring their security and protection from any form of arbitrary, unsafe, discriminatory, or inhumane treatment. It is vital to properly protect and guarantee the socio-economic and religious conditions of the population, as noted in the report.

In addition to the aforementioned developments, the announcement by the European Union also included Albania, Andorra, former Presidents of Lichtenstein, Monaco, Macedonia, San Marino, and Serbia. This indicates a broader perspective and engagement of various countries and leaders in addressing the human rights situation in Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the Republic of Artsakh.
