“Armenian Government Takes Action to Regulate Film Industry – Introduces Measures to Classify, License, and Manage Film Distribution”

The government has approved measures to regulate the temporary and permanent classification of films, as well as the provision of film rental licenses. These measures will come into effect on January 18. The decision has been made because the field of Armenian cinematography currently lacks regulation in terms of classification and distribution mechanisms.

This lack of regulation undermines the management of the film industry, as well as the production and distribution of local films. It also affects the assessment of film box office revenue, the marking of film ratings, the division of revenue among film creators, and the growth of both the domestic and foreign film market.

The rental license is an official document that confirms the distributor’s rights in the film distribution market. It will now be mandatory for all types of screenings. The purpose of this license is to regulate the management of the film distribution market and ensure proper monetization. It will also enable the analysis of film demand and the monitoring of market revenue dynamics.

In addition, films will now be subject to classifications and age restrictions prior to distribution. This is in accordance with the law on the transfer of restricted information. The aim is to ensure that films are appropriately classified and age-restricted, as well as to regulate the dynamics of the market.

Therefore, any film entering the market must obtain a rental license. This new regulation will contribute to the overall improvement of the Armenian film industry, and create a more structured and sustainable market for both local and foreign films.
