“Armenia Launches Investigation into Illegal Transport and Storage of Hazardous Substances in Syunik Province”

Armenia’s regional investigative committee is currently conducting an investigation into the illegal transportation and storage of large quantities of hazardous substances in the Syunik province. According to NEWS.am, the regional investigative committee of Armenia’s National Security Service received information on January 11, 2024, concerning the operation of an illegal operational-technical facility near the village of Chakaten, where significant amounts of hazardous substances were being transported and stored.

During the investigation, it was discovered that a “Crayler” crane was found containing over 10 kilograms of various hazardous materials. Furthermore, a vehicle’s washing facility was found to contain a total of 12 kilograms of a substance similar to the hazardous substances. As a result, the driver and the owner of the vehicle were apprehended and are currently facing prosecution for their involvement in the illegal transportation and storage of hazardous substances.

Subsequent investigation efforts also revealed that the vehicle’s washing facility was housing approximately 4.6 kilograms of “Methamphetamine” and 200 grams of “Heroin”. Furthermore, around 6.2 kilograms of substances resembling those found in hazardous materials such as “Marijuana”, “Opium”, and “Ecstasy” were also discovered during the investigation process.

It was uncovered during the investigation that neither the driver nor the vehicle’s owner possessed the necessary permits to transport hazardous materials. Consequently, they were arrested for violating Armenia’s criminal code. Presently, the case remains ongoing, and authorities are taking further measures to safely dispose of the confiscated hazardous materials.
