“Baku Unites in Support of Activist Fail Alsinov as Controversial Trial Begins”

In Baku, a large crowd has gathered outside the court building where the trial of the Baymak city residents is taking place. The population of Baymak is around 17,000, and it is estimated that about five thousand people are showing their support for activist Fail Alsinov and advocating for other causes.

The trial, initially scheduled to begin on Tuesday, has now been postponed to January 17, Thursday. The public prosecutor is seeking a four-year prison sentence for Alsinov on charges of incitement to violence and dissemination of extremist materials. Alsinov has made controversial statements regarding “Caucasians,” “Middle Asia,” and “Armenians.”

However, Alsinov’s lawyer argues that the trial is based on a misinterpretation of his client’s words. According to the lawyer, Alsinov used the phrase “kara khalik,” which means “black people” but is interpreted in contemporary Turkish languages as “inadequate, poor people.”

Fail Alsinov is a well-known figure in Baku due to his participation in rallies advocating for the preservation of the Qushta mountain. He also aimed to rehabilitate the “Bashkiriya society,” which was established to protect the Bashkortostan monument. However, the 2020 organization has been labeled as “subversive” and dissolved.

In October 2023, Alsinov was attacked in Ufa when he received a signature approving his departure from the city.
