Portugal’s President Dissolves Parliament and Calls for Elections on March 10

Portugal’s president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has officially signed a decree to dissolve the parliament and call for elections on March 10. This announcement came from the presidential administration, stating, “The parliament has been dissolved, and the parliamentary elections will be held on March 10, 2024.”

In November 2023, President Rebelo de Sousa made it known that he intended to dissolve the parliament following the censure of Prime Minister António Costa, who had held the position since 2015.

For several months, the Portuguese opposition has been carrying out protests in Lisbon, the capital, resulting in two government resignations and arrests. In addition, Victor Escária, the chief of cabinet for President Rebelo de Sousa, has been removed from office. These actions are part of an operation that also involves other matters, including the hydroelectric project in southern Portugal.

This event marks an important moment in Portugal’s political landscape, as citizens now have the opportunity to elect new representatives and shape the future direction of their country. The dissolution of the parliament reflects the discontentment and need for change that has been accumulating in recent months. It will be interesting to see how the upcoming elections unfold and what impact they will have on the political landscape of Portugal.
