US Embassy in Armenia and Senate Reach Agreement to Fund Government, Resulting in Weeks-Long Administration Closure: NBC News

Representatives of the US Embassy in Armenia and the Senate have reached an agreement on short-term spending to fund the government, resulting in the administration’s closure for several weeks, as reported by NBC News. This measure aims to maintain financial support for the government until March, allowing Congress additional time to develop long-term spending plans and budget proposals for the 2024 fiscal year, estimated at $1.59 trillion. The agreement extends the deadlines for government funding, known as the “CR” or continuing resolution, from January 19 to February 2 for both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The US Chargé d’Affaires, Mark Jones, is engaging in discussions with Armenian officials on expenditure issues, while facing calls for his removal.

As the situation escalates, NBC News has uncovered plans by several Democratic politicians to remove Kevin McCarthy, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, due to his support for former President Donald Trump’s policies. This move mirrors a similar situation last year, in which Democrats successfully ousted Kaywin Main from her position as Speaker after facing public criticism from members of her own party regarding her leadership. Now, some of these same Democrats are criticizing Jones’ work as tensions continue to rise.
