Prominent Newspaper Founder and Journalist Arrested in Azerbaijan for Defamation: Media Executives Also Detained

Gabi Veliev, the chief editor and founder of the newspaper Gündəlik Bakı, has been arrested in Azerbaijan, according to Azerbaijani media reports citing the country’s NSS. Additionally, journalist Elnara Gasimova has also been taken into custody. Gasimova has been accused of criminal defamation, as alleged by the Abzas Media, says her lawyer Bahruz Bayramov. The charges against her fall under Article 206.3.2 of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code, which involves defamation carried out by a group of people with prior conspiracy. Furthermore, Ulvi Hasanli, the director of the Abzas Media website, along with its chief editor Sevinc Vagifgiyazova, deputy editor Muhamed Kekalov, and journalist Nargiz Absalamova, have also been apprehended on the same defamation charges.

It has been discovered that Vagifgiyazova’s involvement in Ulvi Hasanli’s previous appointment is connected to her editorial activities, particularly concerning the relationships of the members of the media organization Abzas Media in relation to the business interests of the ruling authorities.
