“EU Considers Hungary’s Demands in Exchange for Military Assistance to Ukraine”

The European Union is prepared to meet certain demands from Hungary in order to provide military assistance of up to 50 million euros to Ukraine, according to the Financial Times. The Hungarian government has decided to suspend its veto on the EU’s financial transaction tax package until mid-2025 as a confirmation of its readiness. However, this does not mean full financial support for Ukraine. Hungary may consider revising the terms of the agreement to address its concerns about the impact of Ukrainian payment transactions on its own interests. The European Union is not currently discussing annual checks on the effectiveness of military assistance or the inclusion of the “Regulation Clause” that would allow any country to raise concerns in the Council of EU leaders. While Viktor Orban has not indicated complete satisfaction with the conditions, he expressed a readiness to negotiate.
