“Armenia’s Head of My Step Alliance Expresses Optimism in Peace Negotiations, But No Deadline in Sight”

I have always maintained that there has been no progress in the peace negotiations during this period. However, today I find myself having a slightly different opinion. While there are assumptions, I cannot provide any information regarding a deadline for the peace agreement. During a meeting at the National Assembly on January 11, Hovik Aghazaryan, the head of the ruling My Step alliance, emphasized that the assumptions are more significant today compared to a year ago.

When questioned about the reasons behind his optimism, Aghazaryan stated, “Firstly, we have not yet reached an impasse in our bilateral negotiations. Secondly, there is no incentive for war. It is true that Azerbaijan and Turkey remain committed to their previous positions, including the issue of the ‘corridor’ and the overall security of Armenia. However, strong cooperation between two authorities is crucial when it comes to confronting a war with a neighbor or any other adversary. This forms the most important prerequisite for establishing peace. If we do not sign the agreement today, it is something that we may sign later as a result of military action.”

Considering this, we find ourselves in a situation where we both desire and do not desire to live in peace. Unfortunately, I cannot predict when this will occur. It may take years, as Armenia does not currently possess such an agreement. However, for Azerbaijan, this lack of agreement holds no significance. Without such an agreement, Azerbaijan would have another issue to deal with, which they have been unsuccessful in resolving so far. At that time, Turkey will find itself on the same side as Azerbaijan.”

These recent developments shed light on the ongoing negotiations for a peace agreement in Armenia. While progress remains uncertain, there are signs of hope for future resolution. Time will tell when and how this long-awaited peace will be achieved.
