Social Media Exploited to Extort Money from Russian Expats and Armenian Girls in Armenia, Warns Police

Social media, particularly the popular online dating app “Tindər,” has become a platform for extortion targeting Russian expats and girls in Armenia. According to the Police of the Republic of Armenia, individuals are using written communication on social media to extort money from Armenian citizens of various ages.

Reports indicate that scammers have been sending links to fake theater websites to lure victims into purchasing tickets. In this scheme, low-quality websites linked to Russian-speaking representatives of the LGBT community are being used. When individuals enter these websites, they are prompted to provide their bank card details and make payments. As a result, not only are they charged for the ticket’s value, but in some cases, scammers also drain the victims’ entire account balances.

The Police of the Republic of Armenia is currently using their technical expertise in information technology to investigate this case. Over 100 victims have already fallen prey to this extortion method, prompting the police to encourage citizens to report incidents directly from the theater websites. They advise victims to refrain from involving third parties and instead use reliable payment services.
