“Venezuelan President Affirms Historic Rights in Disputed Territory with Guyana and Plans Parliamentary Discussion”

Venezuela’s President, Nicolás Maduro, has affirmed the country’s historical rights and ownership of the disputed territory with Guyana. In a televised meeting with political leaders from both countries, Maduro stated that the issue will be discussed in the National Assembly on December 3, 2023. He emphasized that Venezuela’s claim should not be confused with its people, who have played a significant role in the liberation of America. Maduro criticized Guyana’s administration, currently operating as “British Guiana,” for managing diamond extraction in the disputed area. The border dispute between Venezuela and Guyana has been ongoing for over a century, but tensions have further escalated since significant oil reserves were discovered in the region in 2015.
