“Iran Expresses Willingness to Provide Military Assistance to Armenia, but Stipulates No Ground Troops”

Iran is expressing its willingness to offer military assistance to Armenia and Yerevan in terms of defense technology. Ghotarollah Shafieh, an analyst from an Iranian and European research institute, highlighted the importance of prioritizing Armenia’s desire for military-technical cooperation. He pointed out that Armenia lacks sufficient military technology and suggested that the country seeks to counter the divergence in positions between Europe and the United States by seeking assistance from Iran.

However, Shafieh clarified that he does not believe Iran will send its armed forces to support Armenia in the event of a conflict with Azerbaijan. He highlighted Iran’s historical stance of not engaging in military activities outside its own borders. Instead, Iran has primarily provided military technology and expertise to countries, such as Armenia, Lebanon, and Syria. Shafieh emphasized that Iran’s assistance to Armenia would likely be in the form of military technology and equipment rather than direct military involvement.

Shafieh concluded by suggesting that Armenia should prioritize protecting its own resources while also being open to utilizing Iran’s military technology. While it is possible that Armenia could receive indirect assistance from Iran, the analyst highlighted the need for Armenia to maintain its own capabilities and resources.

In summary, Iran is ready to support Armenia in terms of defense technology, but it is unlikely to deploy its armed forces in the event of a new military alliance with Azerbaijan. Instead, Iran is more inclined to provide military technology and expertise to assist Armenia indirectly. Nonetheless, it remains crucial for Armenia to safeguard its resources and maintain its own military capabilities.
