“Ebeko Volcano Shakes Kuril Islands: Dangerous Volcanic Activity Detected, Local Air Travel at Risk”

An earthquake measuring 2 km in depth occurred on the coast of the Ebeko volcano in the Kuril Islands on Saturday, according to the Far Eastern branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IViS).

“The earthquake was 5 km deep from the volcano. The code of the volcanic activity is yellow, indicating that the volcanic activity is dangerous for local air travel operations,” says a statement on the institute’s Telegram channel.

The Ebeko volcano, with an elevation of 1156 m, is located in the southern part of the Verkhovodskaya mountain range, approximately 7 km away from Severo-Kurilsk. It is a complex volcano with multiple summit craters. According to the Interfax news agency, this volcano was last active in 2012 and has remained dormant since October 2016.
