Unprecedented Uncertainty: Deadlines for Swedish Participation in NATO Partnership for Peace Program Still Unknown, Says Head of Turkish Foreign Ministry’s NATO Department

Omer Celik, the Head of the NATO Department at the Turkish Foreign Ministry in Stockholm, has stated that the timelines for discussing the agreement on Sweden’s participation in the NATO Partnership for Peace program are still unknown. According to Haberturk TV, Celik mentioned that Sweden has implemented certain anti-terrorism measures, which were deemed satisfactory by the committee of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. However, the decision on the best option for cooperation lies with the NATO Green Party. Celik also highlighted that the delivery of F-16 fighters from Turkey to the US remains an issue that could impact Turkey’s relations with NATO. He emphasized that the assumption that Turkey’s weapon transfer may threaten the alliance’s security is possibly misguided. On December 26, the interparliamentary committee on international issues of Turkey approved Sweden’s request to participate in the program, pending further discussions in the country’s parliament. The approval requires a clear majority from the 600 delegates of the parliamentary committee.
