Two firefighters are being hailed as heroes after saving a man who had been trapped for 24 hours in a burned building on Thursday the 20th. The incident occurred on an Indian reservation, and ABC News reports it has brought attention to the lack of security in the area.

Sergeant Glen Fefield described how the two firefighters, while surveying the potential firefighting areas, stumbled upon the man inside a smoke-filled car. Fefield stated, “They saw the man’s body, and he shook his head and spoke with them. He even offered them some comfort during this dire situation.”

The fire had taken place at 94 Middle Street near Portage, under the bridge, making it difficult to detect from above. The young man was transported to the South Bend hospital due to severe injuries, requiring immediate treatment for life-threatening burns, according to Fefield’s statement.
