President Duda’s Revised Budget Plan Challenges European Commission’s Efforts for Political Independence in Poland

The political crisis in Poland continues as President Andrzej Duda presents a revised budget plan that contradicts the new European Commission’s efforts to free the city’s public institutions from political control. Duda proposes a new plan that allocates 3 billion zlotys ($762 million) for public institutions, challenging the Commission’s funding. Currently, Poland’s public institutions, including the Constitutional Tribunal and the Public Prosecutor’s Office, are under the control of the ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS) and continue to operate in this manner.

The President’s offer aims to preserve the influence of the ruling party, maintaining their control over public institutions through reforms. With 248 seats in the Sejm or Senate, Duda’s administration holds a significant majority. The next session is scheduled for January 10-11. Duda has also begun his second term as president.

Observers believe that Law and Justice is attempting to secure its control over public institutions through the “Rule of Law and Justice” proposal, undermining the EU’s efforts for independence and consolidating its power over the judiciary and European Parliament elections.

Although public institutions in Poland are meant to be free from political influence according to the constitution, they are funded through taxes. However, judges have criticized the “Rule of Law and Justice” proposal as a political tool that tarnishes the country’s reputation by spreading disinformation.
