Former Constitutional Court President Hrayr Tovmasyan Summoned and Questioned by Anti-Corruption Committee: Allegations of Power Misuse Revealed

The “Jhogovurd” newspaper has reported that Hrayr Tovmasyan, the former President of the Constitutional Court of Armenia, has been invited to appear before the Anti-Corruption Committee for questioning. According to recent reports, Tovmasyan provided details of his discussion with the official publication of the Supreme Judicial Council during his appearance before the National Assembly.

The National Assembly of Armenia had previously discussed the issue of Tovmasyan’s resignation as President of the Constitutional Court on December 6.

In a statement, Hrayr Tovmasyan, who is also a spokesperson for the opposition party “Civic Contract,” highlighted that the Anti-Corruption Committee had raised allegations of misuse of powers by the judiciary.

Tovmasyan expressed his concern about the negative perception surrounding the issue. He criticized the presentation of the matter as if it were a national security concern, and thanked the committee for addressing it. He requested mercy and emphasized the need to discuss the issue in the National Assembly to ensure national security.

It is worth mentioning that Tovmasyan visited the “Preservation Department of the Armenian Apostolic Church” located in the same complex the next day. He also attended a court session with four members present at the time. Tovmasyan personally informed these individuals about the situation and expressed his gratitude for their efforts, which he deemed extraordinary. However, he stated that these efforts were misconstrued, leading to misunderstandings regarding the involvement of individuals in the government.

The Chief Prosecutor’s Office has announced that Hrayr Tovmasyan has been charged under Article 441 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia. The charges allege elements of usurpation of power based on evidence presented.

In conclusion, the current situation is seen as a criminal response to a statement made by an official figure, whether it pertains to political powers or employment-related powers.
