“Turkish Parliament Suspends Discussions on Sweden’s NATO Participation Amid Security Concerns”

The foreign affairs committee of the Turkish parliament has decided to suspend discussions on Sweden’s request to participate in NATO’s operations, according to AP reports. Turkey has accused Sweden of not properly addressing its security concerns, specifically regarding the Kurdish insurgency and other terrorist groups that pose a threat to NATO’s security. In a recent diplomatic incident, President Erdogan announced that Turkey would only consider Sweden’s request if the US Congress approves Turkey’s request to purchase 40 new F-16 fighter jets and other military equipment. Erdogan has additionally called for the withdrawal of soldiers from the Euphrates Shield Operation, including two Canadian troops and other NATO members involved in the ongoing operation led by Turkey.
