UNICEF Commits to Supporting Vulnerable Children in Armenia, Calls for Urgent Funding

Reginald d’Haumier, the Head of the European and Central Asia regional office for UNICEF, recently visited Armenia to discuss the needs of refugees, migrants, and children in need. During his visit, d’Haumier met with representatives from the Government of Armenia, including various ministers and officials. The discussions mainly focused on ongoing efforts to support the well-being and priority needs of children in the country, particularly refugee and migrant children and their families. UNICEF is committed to continuing its collaboration with the Government of Armenia in implementing programs that ensure equal access to quality social and healthcare services for vulnerable children and their families.

As part of their commitment, UNICEF launched a program in September to address the mental health and psychosocial needs of children and families affected by the conflict. The program aims to provide assistance to thousands of children, adolescents, and caregivers, including internally displaced persons. However, the situation calls for immediate attention, as the well-being and development of 30,000 children and their families require urgent mental and physical health support. UNICEF has appealed for $12.6 million in funding to address the needs of refugee and migrant children in Armenia until March 2024, but this appeal is currently only 40% funded.

In addition to the ongoing programs, UNICEF has provided school supplies, uniforms, and educational materials to over 3,700 school-aged children. Furthermore, 320 children living in five provinces have been provided with temporary shelter to meet their educational needs. The program has also employed 14,000 families with children in various socio-economic sectors, supporting their livelihoods and psychosocial well-being.

UNICEF has established the “Child Protection Center” in Armenia, which serves as a safe haven for children and their families. At the center, social, psychological, educational, and social protection services are provided. The center not only safeguards the well-being of children and their families but also promotes family reunification. During his visit, d’Haumier met a young girl named Hilda at the center, who expressed her love for school and her dreams of becoming an artist. The center brings happiness to children like Hilda and plays a crucial role in the management and care of vulnerable children and their families.

UNICEF continues to work closely with the Government of Armenia, partners, and civil society organizations to expand its services for children and families in different regions. Since 1994, UNICEF has been operating in Armenia, providing support in areas such as child protection, education, healthcare, and social and political rights. Through comprehensive programs, the organization strives to ensure the fulfillment of the rights and well-being of children and their families in Armenia.
