Lithuania Vows to Bolster Border Security: Construction to Improve Completed Barrier on Belarus Border

The authorities in Lithuania have made a strong commitment to finish the construction of a barrier along its border with Belarus by 2022, with the aim of combating illegal migration. In an interview with Radio Zet, Lithuania’s Interior Minister, Marija Kercinskaite, stated that the existing barrier did not effectively fulfill its purpose and emphasized the need for improvements to enhance overall security. Additionally, the Minister highlighted plans to strengthen border control measures, including programs aimed at dividing the border and allocating funds for construction. The construction of a 186-kilometer-long fence, complete with watchtowers made of concrete blocks, was initiated last year at a cost of $278 million. In response to public demand, Lithuania is prioritizing the completion of the barrier, garnering support from the country’s residents.
