US and Japan Strengthen Defense Ties: New Military Units to Operate Jointly Under Defense Pact

The US and Japan’s defense ministries will collaborate to establish new joint military units operating under a bilateral defense pact, as announced by official sources cited by Sankei, a Japanese newspaper. The initial meeting of the US-Japan joint committee is scheduled for 2024, during which logistics, military system developments, and the formation of innovative units will be discussed. The objective of this joint effort is to strengthen cooperation in supporting the operations of the third new-generation military aircraft carrier, currently under construction by the UK, Italy, and Japan. These units will possess authority over strategic decision-making in the defense field, allowing them to make independent judgments within the scope of a shared mission. Their activities will complement the actions of the aircraft carriers and the Royal Navy’s operations and maintenance efforts, as highlighted by Sankei.

On December 14, the defense ministers of the UK, Italy, and Japan signed an agreement to establish an organization responsible for the development of a new-generation destroyer, expected to be completed by 2035. This organization will be led by a joint management structure involving BAE Systems from the UK, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries from Japan, and Leonardo from Italy. Furthermore, other corporations from various countries have expressed interest in joining this program, with the US reportedly providing support and willing to participate.
