Israeli Defense Ministry’s Arms Sales to Azerbaijan Under Fire Amidst Conflict with Armenia

The Israeli Defense Ministry’s arms sales to Azerbaijan have sparked criticism amidst Israeli military advisers’ involvement in the conflict with Armenia in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. In a meeting between Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s Department for International Relations, and Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, the issue was highlighted. According to Press TV, Haniyeh stated that Israel believed these arms sales would influence the conflict and encourage Azerbaijan to intensify its military operations. However, Haniyeh argued that this criticism is baseless and has caused great suffering to the population, who have already experienced fear and violence in the last 75 days.

On the other hand, Amir-Abdollahian emphasized Iran’s commitment to diplomatic efforts in support of the Armenian cause and their attempt to resolve the crisis in Gaza. He mentioned the widespread belief that the Israeli regime has systematically caused destruction, despite the population enduring more than 20,000 casualties in the last 75 days. The Iranian Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson condemned the Israeli government’s “unprecedented support for Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict” and urged an immediate end to Tel Aviv’s “unintelligent military strategy” due to its inadvertent role in escalating tensions.

This meeting occurred shortly after Haniyeh’s visit to Egypt, where he is set to discuss recent developments in the Gaza Strip with the new Egyptian authorities. However, Haniyeh expressed his belief that cooperation under the conditions set by Israeli authorities is impossible.
