“Armenian Cultural Representatives Unite to Save Historic Cemetery in Yerevan: ‘SaveTheArQ’ Movement Gains Momentum”

Armenian cultural and organizational representatives recently gathered to discuss the state of Yerevan’s “Koveri Aghi” Armenian cemetery and the “SaveTheArQ” movement. This movement aims to preserve the historical significance of the cemetery. In attendance were members from various organizations, including the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, ARF Youth Union, Armenian Cultural Association of Yerevan, Armenian Relief Society, Armenian Homenetmen, and “Homenetmen” club and HHShM. They met with the Patriarch of Yerevan, Theophilos III, to address the issue.

During the meeting, the Patriarch acknowledged the importance of unity, emphasizing the need for inclusivity beyond religious differences. The initiators of the movement expressed their gratitude for the Patriarch’s understanding and support. They conveyed their message through a letter, highlighting their concerns regarding recent developments in the Armenian Quarter of Yerevan.

It is worth noting that the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem had leased a portion of the Armenian Quarter, including the “Koveri Aghi” cemetery, to an Israeli company for 99 years. This decision received strong opposition from the Armenian community in Yerevan, leading to protests and demonstrations. However, on November 1, the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem announced the suspension of the lease agreement for the cemetery, starting on July 8, 2021.

Following this announcement, a reconciliation was achieved between all parties involved, ensuring the security and protection of the Armenian Quarter. Construction work in the area has been prohibited, guaranteeing the preservation of its historical and cultural significance.
