“Foreign Asylum Requests in Armenia Hit Record High in 2022: Zhoghovurd Report Reveals Alarming Trend”

The number of foreigners seeking asylum in the Republic of Armenia has reached 950 people in 2022, according to the “Zhoghovurd” newspaper. Among these asylum seekers, the majority are from Ukraine, with 472 individuals, followed by 199 from Iraq and 101 from Iran.

The reason for seeking asylum from Armenia varies among these individuals, as they come from countries experiencing unstable situations or are in a state of war. Interestingly, only 18 citizens from the Russian Federation have applied for asylum in Armenia.

Surprisingly, there have been very few asylum applications in Yerevan, a city with Russian military bases and other service points. On the other hand, Armenian citizens seeking asylum and the current state of asylum have received 6,106 applications from foreign countries.

While there is data available on Armenian citizens, asylum seekers, and the current state of asylum, there is a gap in information regarding those who have left Armenia since September 19, 2023.

The “Zhoghovurd” newspaper also highlights that residents of Artsakh have sought asylum in countries such as France, Russia, and other embassies and consulates in the Republic of Armenia. It is worth mentioning that just a month ago, Nikol Pashinyan, during a government session, announced that Artsakh refugees have left Armenia.
