“Hope Prevails as Armenia and Azerbaijan Work Towards Peace Agreement, But Challenges Remain”

Armenia and Azerbaijan have not yet reached a signed agreement on the cessation of hostilities. However, there is hope that the text of the agreement will be finalized by January, when the heads of the parties are expected to meet. The RA Ministry of Defense, speaking on behalf of representative Edmond Marukyan, mentioned the possibility of military actions between the two countries.

Marukyan expressed his view that the return of 32 prisoners from Azerbaijan is a positive step towards consolidating a ceasefire between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He also expressed hope that further small steps can contribute to the establishment of a lasting peace agreement.

Furthermore, Marukyan highlighted that the conditions outlined in the statement announced on November 9, 2020, have yet to be fully met. He pointed out an error in the belief that the United States, Brussels, or Moscow are the guarantors in case of violations. Marukyan emphasized the need for a documented mechanism with clearly defined conditions for upholding the status quo between the parties involved.
