“Military Unit Tragedy: Investigation Underway into Soldier’s Actions in Sevan Village Clash”

An investigation is currently taking place in the village of Sevan in Gegharkunik province regarding the actions of Leon Khachatryan, who injured 15 soldiers in the military unit of Azat village. There was a disagreement between the military personnel and the head of the shift, which led to this unfortunate incident.

According to Khachatryan, he was informed by his fellow soldiers, Harach and Narek, about an attack that occurred a few days ago. They mentioned receiving phone calls and discovering things in their phones that should not have been ordered. Tension escalated, resulting in a physical confrontation. Narek has since left the military service, while the commander of the unit mentioned resolving the situation in other ways. Khachatryan expressed his confusion, stating that such actions were never taught in the army and seemed to be an attempt to change their work environment.

When questioned about his exchange of information with Eghishe Hakobyan, Khachatryan mentioned a heated argument involving Narek. However, he clarified that there was no fight; it was related to hygiene problems between Tigran and Narek. Khachatryan also mentioned that he was unsure about the exact date someone consumed alcohol but claimed that everyone was sober and focused on their duties that day.

Regarding the incident itself, Khachatryan expressed his shock and disbelief that Narek’s conflict with Eghishe could result in such tragic consequences. He admitted that he, too, wonders why he didn’t intervene to prevent the soldiers from leaving the barracks. Khachatryan emphasized that he had always seen Narek trying to help everyone and could not have imagined he would act in such a manner.

Recalling the events from January 19, in the territory of Azat village, 15 soldiers lost their lives, while 7 were transported to Vardenis hospital. Four of them were discharged after receiving medical treatment, but three soldiers with serious injuries were transferred to the Armenian National Burn Center in Yerevan. As a result of this incident, the 2nd company commander and seven other high-ranking military officials were relieved of their duties.

Hours later, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan claimed that the official responsible for the administration had died due to a gas leak in the canteen during the heating process. The official allegedly entered the area wearing a gas mask but accidentally ignited the gas with a match, leading to the explosion. This revelation sparked further investigation into the incident, resulting in a criminal case being filed under the RA Criminal Code Articles 342 part 4 (negligent attitude to service) and 350 part 3 (infringement of service rules).
