Armenian President Armen Sarkissian Commits to Global Climate Change Responsibilities, Targets 60% Renewable Energy by 2040

Armenian President Armen Sarkissian believes that Armenia has a responsibility to address climate change and environmental issues on a global scale. In an interview with Armlink, Sarkissian highlighted Armenia’s participation in the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP 28) of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Sarkissian acknowledged that Armenia, like other countries around the world, faces challenges in meeting the requirements and limitations of internationally agreed commitments on climate change. Over the years, Armenia has undertaken various measures to reduce carbon emissions and promote renewable energy sources.

Currently, Armenia has 5 percent of renewable energy in its energy system. However, Sarkissian expressed confidence in achieving a significant transformation through the Energy Army initiative. By 2030, the goal is to reach 15 percent renewable energy consumption. Looking even further ahead, the President outlined an ambitious plan to transition to alternative forms of energy such as hydrogen, solar, wind, and nuclear energy. By 2040, it is expected that nearly 60 percent of Armenia’s energy system will come from these sources.

Sarkissian emphasized the importance of reducing dependence on traditional fuel and embracing alternative energy sources. This includes exploring innovative technologies like electric vehicles and water-operated machinery, should viable solutions be found. However, the President acknowledged that implementing these new technologies presents its own set of challenges.

The President’s speech made it clear that these obligations extend to all countries globally, and Armenia is committed to keeping pace and contributing to the collective effort to combat climate change.
