“Prime Minister Pashinyan Affirms Military Goals for Defense and Sovereignty while Denying Allegations of Abuse of Power”

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan reaffirmed Armenia’s military goal of defending the Republic of Armenia, protecting its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. He addressed the parliament on December 6, responding to Seyran Ohanyan, the leader of the “Armenia” faction, stating that Armenian military involvement in Artsakh, relations with Artsakh’s leadership, and efforts to bring back the Artsakh leaders are confirmed.

Pashinyan noted that certain forces have selfishly used the power of the Armenian Armed Forces, hindering the establishment of a stable government in Armenia. He emphasized that this decision had been made earlier and the government was functioning accordingly.

The Prime Minister also emphasized that the Karabakh issue has not been part of the agenda since the 1996 Lisbon Summit. Armenia does not accept this condition and considers it an internal problem. The determination of self-determination was the agreed-upon approach at the summit, suggesting that the Republic of Artsakh should have self-governance within Azerbaijan’s system.

Pashinyan clarified that Armenia does not adhere to the terminology used during the conflict that led to the current situation, and its focus is on the Constitution of Armenia and its response to the Artsakh situation.

Regarding Azerbaijan’s attempts to undermine Armenia’s security and the importance of preserving Armenian institutions in Artsakh, Pashinyan expressed concerns about Armenia’s vulnerability. He dismissed claims that Armenian institutions have abandoned Artsakh, referring to it as a “hallucination”. He also assured that efforts were being made to repatriate prisoners of war to their families.
