“Political Majority Meeting on Parliamentary Sessions Rejected by Ruling Party, Special Session Called”

The long-awaited political majority meeting on the organization of parliamentary sessions and debates did not receive permission from the ruling party and will be discussed in a special session. On December 5, Artur Khachatryan, the spokesperson of the “Armenia” alliance, announced that the Republican Party had rejected the proposed plan by the “Hayk” initiative, which aimed to introduce a new format for parliamentary sessions. Khachatryan criticized the rejection, stating that it hinders Armenian parliamentarism. In response, Alen Simonyan, the Speaker of the National Assembly, highlighted the importance of forming elected bodies and criticized the opposition for not participating in sessions.

Aleksey Minasyan, a lawmaker and member of the “Hayastan” alliance, also expressed opposition and emphasized the need to fulfill campaign promises. He argued that the opposition should not only criticize, but also exemplify the fulfillment of promises. Simonyan defended his position, stating that the public expects him to restore confidence in the system. He mentioned that the supporters of the ruling party are satisfied with their choice. The Speaker further stressed the importance of having an effective opposition in Armenia.

Artsvik Minasyan, the leader of the “Armenia” alliance, echoed the criticism of the opposition’s failure to fulfill campaign promises. Khachatryan also highlighted that the protests aim not only to weaken campaign promises but also to continue similar actions. Minasyan concluded that his preferred format for parliamentary sessions will be discussed in 2026.

This news from Armenia sheds light on the political dynamics surrounding the organization of parliamentary sessions and debates. The rejection of the proposed plan by the ruling party has sparked criticism from opposition figures, who argue for the importance of fulfilling campaign promises. On the other hand, the Speaker of the National Assembly emphasizes the need for an effective opposition and defends the actions of the ruling party. The debate on the preferred format for parliamentary sessions will continue in the coming years, indicating the ongoing discussions and potential changes in Armenia’s political landscape.
