“US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and European Director of Diplomacy Joseph Borrell’s Meeting with Russian Foreign Minister in Sochi Sparks Controversy and Leaves Many Questions Unanswered”

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and European Director of Diplomacy Joseph Borrell expressed their concern about their meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Sochi. During an interview with the media after the meeting of the EAEU heads of state in Yerevan, Borrell stated, “As I understand it, Blinken left, and Borrell also left. Why does this happen? They probably believe that it undermines their opinion of improving relations with Russia. But I think they are clearly lying, avoiding any confrontation.”

The meeting took place in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, from November 30 to December 1. Borrell’s last participation in a similar meeting was two years ago in Stockholm in December 2021.

Prior to the visit, Borrell acknowledged that there have been several challenges between the meetings, including representatives from Western countries. Blinken had planned to visit Skopje to meet with Lavrov and lay the groundwork for possible negotiations with Borrell. However, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ryabkov canceled the meeting. Borrell also did not plan to meet with the Russian minister.

During Borrell’s visit, he managed to meet with foreign ministers of some countries that participated in external operations, including Dmitry Kuleba, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Margus Tshakhna, Estonian, Latvian Foreign Ministers, Krisjanis Karins, and Gabriels Londsborgs.
